Social Media vs. Traditional Shoot

What’s the difference between a Social Media Shoot and a Traditional or Editorial Shoot?

A “Social Media Shoot” is aimed at creating content that enhances visibility, engages followers, and builds or strengthens the photographer’s or client’s online presence.

Traditional or Editorial Shoots prioritize depth, story, and artistic expression over the need for instant engagement.

Social Media Shoot

A “Social Media Shoot” in photography refers to a photoshoot specifically designed to create content tailored for social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and others. These shoots focus on producing visually engaging, high-quality images or videos that align with the fast-paced, attention-grabbing nature of social media.

  1. Platform-specific content: The content is often created with specific platforms in mind, adhering to format guidelines (e.g., square or 4:5 images for Instagram, vertical 9:16 videos for Instagram Stories or TikTok).
  2. Trend-focused: The shoot often considers current social media trends, including popular poses, filters, styles, and themes, to maximize engagement.
  3. Brand or personal identity: For businesses or influencers, the shoot reflects a clear, cohesive brand identity or personal aesthetic that fits into their social media presence.
  4. Quick turn-around: Social media shoots tend to be more frequent and shorter in duration than traditional editorial shoots, providing fresh content regularly.
  5. Engagement-driven: The images are optimized for likes, shares, and comments, with creative, eye-catching elements to increase user interaction.

Traditional or Editorial Shoot

The opposite of a “Social Media Shoot” is the “Traditional or Editorial Shoot” or even a “Fine Art Shoot”, depending on the context. These types of shoots are generally more focused on artistry, long-term use, or print, rather than quick-turnaround, trend-driven content for digital platforms.

  1. Timeless, long-form content: Instead of focusing on the fast-paced nature of social media, these shoots aim to create images or artwork with a longer shelf life, often intended for galleries, magazines, or exhibitions.
  2. High production value: Traditional or editorial shoots often have larger budgets, more elaborate setups, and longer preparation time. They may involve stylists, set designers, and in-depth planning.
  3. Artistic integrity over trends: Instead of following trends, these shoots focus on a unique or conceptual vision, allowing for more creativity, innovation, and artistic expression without the constraints of social media algorithms or trends.
  4. Print-focused: These photos may be aimed at print publications (magazines, books) or large-format printing (billboards, posters), where the visual impact in a physical space is more important than digital engagement.
  5. Longevity: Editorial and fine art shoots create images that are meant to be revisited and appreciated over time, not just in the immediate, fleeting moments of a social media feed.
